Long-term collaboration for increased operational reliability at Varberg hospital

Since the early 2010s, Regin’s partner SI Varberg has collaborated with Region Halland. One of the most extensive projects has been the upgrade of Varberg Hospital in Sweden. Here, the high demands for operational reliability and indoor climate have led to the implementation of Regin’s advanced building automation solutions.

Varberg Hospital provides emergency and planned medical care in several areas and, like many other regions, faces the challenge of aging infrastructure. At the same time, the demand for healthcare services is increasing due to population growth. To meet these challenges, SI Varberg has been involved in renovation and construction at the hospital for several years. A few years ago, a framework agreement was also established to further strengthen the partnership.

“When we began collaborating with Region Halland and Varbeg Hospital, large parts of the ventilation, heating, and cooling systems dated back to the 1970s. By replacing and upgrading these older systems with the help of Regin’s product portfolio, we have achieved a highly efficient and long-term solution”, says Patric Rydell, Project Manager at SI Varberg.

Implementing new systems during ongoing operations brings several challenges. Much of the work has been carried out during evenings and weekends, with strict time constraints to keep ceiling tiles closed and thus maintain hygiene standards. At the same time, it has been crucial to create a robust solution that is not affected by potential operational disruptions.

“A central part of our work has been ensuring that operations continue even during power outages, which is critical to guaranteeing a safe healthcare environment. We have also implemented individual control of heating, ventilation, and cooling in all parts of the hospital. This way, we can ensure optimal climate conditions and improved care quality”, explains Patric Rydell.

Moving forward, additional maintenance work is planned to further adjust and optimize the systems.

“We are very grateful for the excellent cooperation with Regin and Region Halland. Together, we have not only met the hospital’s high demands for operational reliability and indoor climate but also contributed to creating a sustainable healthcare environment for patients and staff in the region”, concludes Patric Rydell.

Technical solution

The solution is built on Regin’s freely programmable controllers connected to a building management system from an external provider. In addition, individual control of heating, ventilation, and cooling is applied using Regin's Regio room controllers. In total, around 600 room controllers have been installed in the facilities, along with numerous field products for a complete solution.

Short facts

Type of solution: Freely programmable controllers, Regio room controllers.
