Modernization of district heating enables digital connectivity

The installation company Cretec, together with Heimstaden, was commissioned to improve the efficiency of several rental properties across Småland in southeast Sweden. Digital connectivity, easy installation, and remote control were key factors in selecting Regin as a subcontractor.

“The collaboration with Regin, Cretec and VVO Konsult has provided us with a solution that is both economically sustainable and operationally efficient. With Regin’s digital cloud service, we can quickly identify system deviations and gain a comprehensive remote overview”, says Magnus Kvarnström, Energy Technician at Heimstaden.

Increased potential for lower energy costs

When the project began, a major challenge was that several of the buildings’ district heating substations were older models, limiting energy efficiency. The solution was to upgrade the substations and install Regin’s heating solution, including the Exigo heating controller in standardized control cabinets, along with other field products such as wireless room sensors and receivers.

“With a complete and pre-programmed heating package, we get an efficient overall solution for replacing outdated control equipment”, says Dennis Boman, Control Technician at Cretec.

“By upgrading the older heating substations, we have been able to implement demand-controlled heating and achieve energy savings of at least 10–15% for each individual substation. Additionally, with wireless room sensors, we can adjust the setpoint curve and further optimize energy use”, Dennis continues.

Efficient solution for installers, technicians and property managers

The focus of the project was to simplify processes for installers, technicians, and property managers. From an installer’s perspective, Dennis emphasizes the importance of a pre-programmed solution.

“The Exigo heating controller simplifies configuration, installation, and commissioning. Instead of connecting a computer and spending hours programming, I can directly download the selected application into the controller and make property-specific adjustments, saving both time and money”.

Dennis also highlights how Regin’s digital cloud service, which functions as a "mini-BMS," streamlines daily maintenance.

“With the support of the CLOUDigo cloud service, we were able to connect the buildings and create dynamic visualizations of relevant measurement data. Since the properties are spread across multiple locations, the ability to manage functions remotely has been particularly valuable. Now, deviations and alarms can be addressed, and full control over energy consumption can be maintained directly through the digital cloud service,” Dennis concludes.
