NKT Lighthouse sets the bar high and invests in a reliable production environment

In the context of an initiative to invest in renewable electricity in Sweden, NKT’s factory in Karlskrona has been expanded with a new production tower, NKT Lighthouse. Standing at 150 meters tall, the tower has become one of the tallest buildings in Sweden. As part of a partnering project, Regin’s partner, INUstyr, has delivered automation technology to ensure an efficient production environment.

One of the world’s largest facilities for producing power cables
With the new tower, which extends both below and above ground, NKT’s factory becomes one of the world’s largest facilities for producing power cables. The height of the tower is crucial for the extrusion of the cable, which is the process of covering the conductor with insulation. Additionally, the right conditions regarding air, pressure, and temperature are required to ensure the cooling of the power cable hanging in a vertical position.

"This is in many ways a unique project where both the anatomy of the building as well as the production environment have placed high demands on us as a supplier. The working area inside the building is no larger than 15x15 meters, which means there is a lot of control needed in a compressed space. At the same time, after strict cleanroom requirements, we have had to focus on precise configuration to achieve maximum control of air quality", explains Michael Rosenberg, Regional Manager & Project Leader at INUstyr.

Control system providing full control of operational reliability
The project is one of the largest Regin installations in history. In total, 13 control cabinets with freely programmable controllers have been installed, along with actuators, sensors, differential pressure switches, and transmitters. The entire system has been connected to the Building Management System Arrigo, which has created excellent conditions for taking control of the production environment. The guiding principles for the extensive installation work have been resilience, robustness, and safety.

"The greatest advantage of an integrated control system is the ability to gain full control over the property's parameters, not only in terms of heating, cooling, and ventilation but also regarding the production environment. Among other things, we have aimed for robustness in the facility so that production can continue in the event of a power outage. Simultaneously, ensuring the building's security and fire protection has been an important part of the project", concludes Michael.

The project was initiated in 2020 and was completed in early 2023. Currently, INUstyr is continuing with the configuration and customization of the system to ensure an efficient and stable production environment in the unique tower moving forward.
