Future-proofing sports facilities with Regin's smart control systems

An outdated facility burdened by high energy costs sparked the urgent need for a modern, public sports complex. When the decision was made to rebuild De Sportwaard, Regin Benelux became a key partner, ensuring the facility and its swimming pool were equipped with cutting-edge automation.

In the Dutch town of Zaltbommel, just 70 kilometers east of Rotterdam, stood a previously outdated sports complex. It suffered from poor accessibility for those with disabilities, cramped changing rooms, and a lack of flexible spaces. Moreover, the manual control of ventilation, heating, and water systems led to consistently high energy consumption and costs. The municipality recognized that demolition and the construction of a new, modern, and future-proof facility was the only viable solution.

In 2019, Hellebrekers won the tender to design and build De Sportwaard. Their responsibilities encompassed everything from design and construction to the operation and maintenance of all technical installations. This included water purification, climate control, HVAC, electrical systems, and the crucial control and regulation technology, for which Regin's partner R2000 was contracted for installation and commissioning.

Regin's Solutions

The primary objective for the facility, especially the swimming pool, was to create a future-proof solution with minimal energy and maintenance costs. The core of the system is Regin's Arrigo BMS (Building Management System). This intelligent system not only provides historical and real-time data for all measured values but also optimizes the facility's operation and maintenance. Freely programmable EXOclever controllers with I/O modules in the switch cabinets allow for flexible and tailored control of heating, ventilation, and the swimming pool's various complex functions.

The new heat pump manages heating, and a drum filter ensures optimal water quality. Heat recovery from backwash and shower water further contributes to the facility's overall energy efficiency. Regin's technology seamlessly controls and coordinates all these functions.

In 2021, the doors opened to the new, versatile De Sportwaard. It now features a full-size sports hall that can be easily divided into four smaller halls, complete with a grandstand for 150 spectators. The swimming pool boasts a 25 x 15-meter competition pool with a grandstand, a group pool with a movable floor, a children's pool, and various other play and relaxation areas.
